Danse macabre, or skeletons dancing, is a theme originating in medieval times. Part allegory and part satire, the often humorous depictions showed skeletons dancing and mocking the wealthy, implying that despite riches, one cannot escape the inevitable.
In 1875 Camille Saint-Saëns composed the Danse Macabre symphony, based upon a French legend of skeletons rising on Halloween for a graveyard dance party.
Similarly, Disney created an animated short called The Skeleton Dance in 1929. In it, skeletons dance and play instruments made from their own bones.
